Description
Description | The Railways and Harbours Administration Development Project for the East African Community will provide a loan of $24 million to the East Africa High Commission to meet part of the costs for a four year development program being implemented by the East African Railways and Harbours Administration (EARHA). The EARHA, a service of the East Africa High Commission, is a statutory body consisting of the Governors of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika. It operates the railways of the three territories, the three main harbors on the Indian Ocean, and extensive road and inland waterway services. Currently, freight traffic on the railways has doubled and the tonnage handled by the ports has more than doubled also. The railways cannot handle all freight offered and congestion in the ports has delayed the movement of both exports and imports. Expansion of railway and port capacities is essential to the continued economic development of East Africa. The project will provide additional capacity by: 1) improving the permanent way and related facilities; 2) procuring locomotives and rolling stock; 3) constructing new railway lines; and 4) implementing a harbor works program. These improvements will increase the capacity of the railways and ports in order to handle new traffic demands. |
