Description

Description

Core problem Global warming is leading to a change in the distribution and characteristics of precipitation. Extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and the flooding that may result from them are expected to increase in certain regions. This also applies to the Malian capital Bamako, where more intense heavy rainfall events are expected as a result of climate change and will probably occur more frequently. Module objective The aim of the project is to sustainably reduce the health risks to the population posed by flooding and the damage to property and infrastructure in particularly badly affected areas of the Malian capital Bamako. To this end, two natural river courses (so-called marigots) that only carry water at certain times of the year are to be expanded and water retention areas created. Key outputs The individual measures and services of the project are predominantly simple, labour-intensive construction measures such as the expansion or new construction of bridges and road culverts, the reinforcement of the banks, the reinforcement of the river bed, the creation of retention and flood areas and the construction of sports and leisure facilities in these retention and flood areas. Target group Overall, the funds provided can be used to protect around 900,000 residents of the city of Bamako directly from the negative consequences of flooding. Indirectly, the entire urban population of Bamako (currently around 2.3 million residents) benefits from the reduced risk of infection with infectious diseases. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 The module is assigned to the core topic of responsibility for our planet, climate and energy, just transition and the field of action of sustainable urban development.
