Description
Description | Flanders and the South of the Netherlands are among the regions with the highest nitrogen emissions in Europe. Too much nitrogen precipitation reduces biodiversity, impoverishes nature and disrupts the ecosystem. Ammonia reduction measures and techniques in the pig and poultry sectors. Ammonia emissions make up an important part of air pollution. Pig and poultry farmers in the border region will be subject to a very strict emission standard in the coming years with regard to ammonia emissions. This poses a major challenge for livestock farming. There are currently initiatives to reduce emissions, but the available abatement techniques are not applicable to existing, not yet ammonia-emission pig sheds. Innovative reduction measures and techniques are also needed in poultry farming. The RAMBO project – Reduction of ammonia through source-oriented and flanking Solutions – will support poultry and pig farms with an integrated approach in their emission reduction approach to meet ammonia emission standards. Measurements and evaluations will be carried out at test and demo sites to assess the impact of measures on ammonia emissions, performance, animal welfare and health, providing input for a supported package of measures to achieve ammonia reductions in stables. These techniques and measures will also be applicable to existing non- ammonia-emission stables in the region. In addition, tools are offered so that farmers can make conscious choices for their specific situation. The knowledge gathered is widely disseminated by engaging the sector through workshops, demonstrations, co-creation, webinars, study trips and days, open days and by providing individual advice to a number of stable owners. As a result, the project makes an important contribution to improving air quality and nature in the border region. |
