Description

Description

The Alameda County Conservation Partnership and UC Cooperative Extension hosted Ranching 101: What Resource Professionals Need to Know to Work Effectively with Ranchers on November 7, 2017. This workshop, led by experienced ranchers and a UC Cooperative Extension Specialist, was designed for land managers and natural resource professionals who work with, or want to work with, ranchers and grazing tenants in the Bay Area. Ranching 101 provided attendees with a unique opportunity to learn about ranching from the perspective of a rancher. Ranching 101 attendees learned about the calendar of activities of a typical Bay Area ranching operation, and how resource management requirements and recommendations affect these activities. Attendees also had the opportunity to view a working ranch, getting the chance to view three calves being processed for pink eye, as well as the wide variety of infrastructure across the ranch required for a proper ranching operation. They also got a glimpse into the wide breadth of daily activities undertaken by ranchers to keep a ranching operation up and running. A glossary of ranching terms was also provided to attendees, to help them brush up on their ranching vocabulary, to more effectively communicate, understand, and work with ranchers.
