In 2004, Ranks Telecom Limited (Rankstel) was awarded a license by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for the provision of fixed telecommunications services in four of five zones in Bangladesh namely – North-West, North-East, South-East, and South-West. This new license directly followed BTRC’s decision to introduce competition in the fixed line sector and thus ending the long standing monopoly of Bangladesh Telegraph & Telephone Board (BTTB). Private operators like Rankstel were seen as key to improving the very low tele-density in Bangladesh. Rankstel began commercial operations in May 2005 with country's southeastern and northeastern regions. In 2007 Ranks contracted with Ericsson to supply its MINI-LINK PDH microwave radio solution in order to expand its network coverage. In 2007, Ranks was awarded the Nationwide PSTN license by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Board. Operator's license was suspended after Illegal VoIP activity. RanksTel won back approval from the telecom regulator on 17th July, 2011 to resume operations after a 16-month shut-down. No investment/capacity amounts were found. Further research is needed.
