Description | The Rastatt Tunnel is a 4,270-metre-long twin-bore tunnel that is part of a major railway project to extend the Rhine Valley main line between Karlsruhe, Germany and Basel, Switzerland to four tracks. The project includes tunnelling using two tunnel boring machines, installation of slab track, overhead electrification, signalling, lighting, and communications systems. The tunnel suffered a collapse in 2017 but is now back on track with civil works completed and railway systems work underway. The tunnel is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. |
