Description

Description

On August 4, 2020, a devastating explosion rocked the port of Beirut, destroying a large part of the port facilities and causing severe damage to the surrounding neighborhoods within a radius of several kilometers. The disaster left over 200 dead, around 7,000 injured, and an estimated 300,000 residents with damaged homes. The restoration of municipal and public infrastructure and services is intended to improve the living conditions of residents in the districts destroyed by the explosion in Beirut's port, as well as residents of other needy districts. Participatory project preparation and implementation as well as targeted peace-building measures are intended to help reduce social tensions, increase the resilience of residents and the institutions supported, and strengthen trust in state actors. Measures include creating opportunities for public participation and implementing the suggestions gained, where feasible. In accordance with the open program approach resulting, among other things, from public participation, individual measures from the following areas are possible: o Improvement of selected sections of the road network and the associated rainwater and sewage networks; o Rehabilitation of selected public spaces; o Rehabilitation and equipment of selected public buildings in connection with renewable energy generation; o Capacity building of municipal staff and other project partners in the provision, operation and maintenance of the financed infrastructure; o Implementation of targeted peace-promoting, community-based measures by local NGOs.
