The City of Brockville proposes to replace an existing sanitary sewer pumping station with a new one. The existing pumping station was constructed in 1962 and upgraded in 1993. It conveys over 90% of the City’s wastewater flow to the City’s water pollution control center for processing. The station has a rated capacity of 33,000 m3/day and on average pumps 16,500 m3/day. Description
Description | The City of Brockville proposes to replace an existing sanitary sewer pumping station with a new one. The existing pumping station was constructed in 1962 and upgraded in 1993. It conveys over 90% of the City’s wastewater flow to the City’s water pollution control center for processing. The station has a rated capacity of 33,000 m3/day and on average pumps 16,500 m3/day. A Schedule B Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) of the pumping station and associated forcemain was completed in 2012 to address current and potential future environmental, technical and operational concerns. The EA identified the following operational issues with the pumping station. 1. The new wet well will be designed and built to accommodate periodic inspections, maintenance and cleaning without having to by-pass untreated sewage to the St. Lawrence River as happens now. 2. The new mechanical bar screen will be fully automated where screened material will be collected in the appropriate bins rather than accumulating on the floor of the facility and manually placed in garbage bins for disposal, thereby improving the health and safety of the operations staff. 3. The new wet well will be designed and built such that its size and configuration along with the positioning of the pumps will no longer cause cavitation of Pumps 1 and 2, thereby ensuring the City is maximizing the life span of the pumps. 4. The new pump station will be designed and built with an air filtration system. This will ensure that the users of the adjacent City park are not subjected to foul odour as they are currently during the summer months. 5. The new station will have new valves, pumps and other pieces of equipment that can be replaced without by-passing raw sewage to the river. |
