Description | Researchers at the Center for Marine Debris Research at Hawaiʻi Pacific University have developed and tested asphalt made from recycled fishing nets and local plastic waste. The project aims to create durable road infrastructure using recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from abandoned fishing nets and residential plastic waste, melted directly into the asphalt binder. Experimental road sections on Oahu have been monitored for 11 months, showing durability comparable to traditional roads and no increased microplastic shedding. |
