US-based Holtec International's SMR-300 small modular reactor has cleared a primary regulatory hurdle in the UK, enabling the redevelopment of the former Cottam coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire into a modern nuclear power hub. The project is in partnership with EDF Energy and will utilize the UK's Advanced Nuclear Framework for site-specific licensing and streamlined deployment. The SMR-300 design has passed Step 2 of the UK's Generic Design Assessment, confirming no fundamental safety or security flaws. Holtec is also pursuing regulatory approvals in the US and leveraging international regulatory cooperation to accelerate deployment.
