Description

Description

Deforestation and inappropriate land use lead to the degradation of natural resources and affect the water production capacity of the springs in the Rio Doce region. The project therefore contributes to reforestation and forest protection by small farmers. The aim of the project is to reforest forests on degraded agricultural land and to restore springs. The project thus contributes to protecting the global climate (SGD 13), preserving biodiversity (SDG 15) and ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water (SDG 6). The grant funds of the FC module amounting to EUR 13.1 million are used to finance reforestation with native tree species so that springs can be restored. In addition, four demonstration units for the targeted promotion of agroforestry and environmental education measures are being financed. The recipient and project sponsor is the Brazilian non-governmental organization (NGO) Instituto Terra, based in Aimorés, in the state of Minas Gerais. WWF Brazil acts as a cooperation partner. The main target group is local small farmers and their families. As part of the measures, they are trained in resource-saving forms of land use. Women, children and young people are also specifically supported through environmental education measures. The project is being implemented in Brazil's tropical coastal forest, the Mata Atlântica. The project area extends across the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
