Water resources in southern Africa are unevenly distributed regionally. 70% of the region's water resources are shared between two or more states. Competing access to this scarce resource is a critical factor in the region's sustainable and peaceful development. In order to ensure a sufficient and safe water supply in the long term and to enable the necessary adaptations to climate change, regional coordination and planning mechanisms must be established and strengthened. The Regional Fund for Water Infrastructure and Basic Sanitation was established with the aim of financing regional water infrastructure projects prioritized by the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The fund is also intended to strengthen the SADC's coordination role and to pool funding from various donors in the long term. This is intended to help improve the economic and political integration of the SADC region. The target group of the measure is 70,000 people who are to benefit from improved water infrastructure and basic sanitation.
