Description
Description | The Caribbean is characterized by a great wealth of biodiversity and natural resources. This wealth is increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change and human activity. One of the drivers of the degradation of natural resources is the overuse of natural resources. The overarching development policy goal of the FC measure is to preserve natural resources and protect biodiversity, as well as to strengthen the resilience of people in the Caribbean against climate change. The module goal is to make a contribution to the long-term financing of biodiversity protection measures in the Caribbean region. The project sponsor is the regional environmental fund Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), which was founded and capitalized in 2012 with the support of KfW through two FC projects. The FC project aims to promote regional integration in the field of biodiversity protection in the Caribbean through new CBF memberships from countries that have not previously been considered (Dominica, Guyana, Haiti, Cuba). To this end, a total of EUR 24 million was paid into the CBF's long-term fund capital. The fund capital is invested by external asset managers. The investment income generated is to be made available annually to the national environmental funds, some of which are still to be set up in Dominica, Guyana, Cuba and Haiti. The grants paid out by the CBF are to be financed by matching grants from the national environmental funds in accordance with an agreed key. EUR 500,000 are available for measures to institutionally strengthen the CBF and the national environmental funds. In addition, up to EUR 1 million is available for reconstruction aid in the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. The total FC funds amount to EUR 25.5 million. The project's partner under international law without an implementation function is the Caribbean Economic Community (CARICOM). |
