Regional Programme Environment and Climate in the Water Sector

The aim of the program is to make a contribution to environmental and climate protection as well as to adaptation to climate change in the urban water sector in Latin America. The program will promote the development of an ecologically sustainable, socially just and economically efficient urban water sector in Latin America and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 6, which aims to ensure access to and sustainable management of water supply and sanitation for all people. The target group is the population of Latin America, whose living conditions will be improved through improved access to reliable and hygienic drinking water and sanitation supplies as well as the associated positive environmental and health effects. The program's support measures in the subsectors of wastewater disposal and treatment, water loss reduction, urban drainage and flood protection, and energy efficiency in water supply focus on the refinancing of investment projects that are eligible for financing and are worthy of support to develop economically efficient and ecologically sustainable water management systems in selected CAF partner countries (CAF - Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina). The measures are particularly aimed at reducing and avoiding negative environmental and climate impacts and adapting to climate change. The program is run by the regional development bank CAF, which provides loans to selected water companies and other borrowers in the region. The program provides for low-interest loans of up to EUR 270 million. In a first phase, a loan of up to EUR 135 million (loan in USD equivalent) is planned.
