Registers, micro-data linking and MNEs in business statistics

Globalisation and the increasing complexity of the activities of MNEs pose challenges to the production of business statistics and to the correct and consistent reflection of MNEs’ activities in national statistics. For efficiency and consistency reasons, the globalisation-related activities, including the EuroGroups Register (EGR), European profiling, national profiling, national Large Cases Units (LCUs), and the Early Warning System (EWS), need to take place in a systematic and coordinated way. The National statistical business register needs to become the core infrastructure for the coordination and data exchange on MNEs. A set of prioritised MNEs, with significant statistical impact should be frequently profiled and updated in the register with high quality information. The objective is to have high quality, consistent and updated information on top MNEs and that this information is integrated into the EGR. Participation in the European profiling programme seeks to benefit the national statistical production system, not only by improving the quality of the national business register but also by serving identified clients, both in business and trade statistics as well as in macroeconomic statistics.
