Description
Description | The FC module Rehabilitation of Rural Roads in Western Kenya II includes investments in the rehabilitation of rural roads in Western Kenya and the strengthening of maintenance capacities at national and district level. The aim is to improve access for the rural population in Western Kenya to agricultural markets and socio-economic infrastructure through increased use of a rehabilitated, climate-resilient and year-round road network. Mobility and transport infrastructure are essential prerequisites for young people in rural areas in particular to gain access to education, jobs and business opportunities along agricultural value chains. The contracting partner is the Kenyan Ministry of Finance, and the project sponsor is the Kenya Rural Road Authority (KeRRA), an autonomous authority of the Kenyan Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MoTIHUD&PW). The FC module contributes to the implementation of the Kenyan Roads 2000 program, which aims to bring rural roads and paths into a maintainable condition using modern methods as quickly, cost-effectively and as employment-promoting as possible. The project will finance road selection, construction design, construction supervision and construction services. The Kenyan contribution is characterized by performance-based maintenance contracts that finance the maintenance of the rehabilitated roads even after the project has been completed. A complementary A+F measure will strengthen the carrier system through capacity building and training measures aimed at KeRRA, MoTIHUD, local district governments and local construction companies. This will strengthen the technical capacities for climate-resilient rehabilitation and maintenance on the one hand and address the structural challenges for the maintenance of the road network on the other. |
