Description
Description | In the Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo), the Ruzizi II hydroelectric power station is located on the Ruzizi River and has been in operation since 1989. It has a generation capacity of up to 43.8 MW. The hydroelectric power station produces a large part of the electricity available in the region, but has not been fundamentally maintained since it was commissioned. In the coming years, increased operating problems and a continuously declining electricity production are therefore to be expected if appropriate measures are not taken. Against this background, the project includes the technical rehabilitation of the Ruzizi II hydroelectric power station with the aim of permanently securing its electricity generation capacity and thus improving the quality and reliability of the electricity supply in the Great Lakes region. At the same time, the project will implement comprehensive reforms of the project sponsor and operator of the hydroelectric power station, the Société Internationale dElectricité des Pays des Grands Lacs (SINELAC), in order to address existing institutional and financial challenges. The target group of the project includes all current and future electricity customers (private households, public institutions and companies) in the Great Lakes region who will benefit from improved electricity supply in the interconnected grid. |
