The project improves the living conditions of returning internally displaced persons and host vulnerable communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and contributes to the stabilization of post-conflict areas (development policy objective). To this end, measures are being implemented to strengthen food security and restore livelihoods. The target group of the project are displaced persons and refugees as well as their host communities and families in the provinces of North and South Kivu in the east of the country. In the context of food security, vulnerable households in particular are supported. Through employment-intensive measures, the target group helps to create or rehabilitate production-relevant infrastructure. At the same time, this creates short-term income (food/cash for assets approach), which improves living conditions. In addition, development-oriented value chains are initiated, including through agricultural advice and strengthening the capacities of small farmers and their cooperatives. Since women are most affected by poverty and food insecurity and are also the most important actors in the agricultural sector, the project specifically addresses them. The recipients of the FC funds are the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). Both organisations are also sponsors of the measure. The additional tranche of EUR 20.0 million proposed here brings the total costs of the project to EUR 35.0 million, which will be financed entirely from an FC grant. The implementation period for the services of the entire project is 36 months.
