It is a US-backed resources project led by Barrick Mining, with a total capital expenditure of $9 billion. The project is planned in two stages: the first stage costing $5.5 billion to produce 200,000 tonnes of copper concentrate and 250,000 oz. of gold annually, and a second stage costing $3.5 billion to double production. The project hosts 1.5 billion tonnes of proven and probable reserves and is expected to generate about $74 billion in free cash flow over 37 years. However, militant attacks and unrest in the region have delayed development timelines, pushing key work towards mid-2027. |
