Reliance Industries is planning a significant entry into the satellite communications space with a multi-billion dollar investment in the low earth orbit (LEO) segment. The project involves forming six teams to work on satellites, launches, payloads, and user terminals. The initiative aligns with India's goal for a domestic satellite communication presence and aims to compete with global players like Starlink and Amazon Leo. The project is spearheaded by Mukesh Ambani and involves engagement with the Department of Telecommunications for filing orbital slots at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Options for inorganic growth, such as acquiring satellite entities with existing infrastructure, are also being considered. The company aims to have LEO satellites in place within two to four years, either organically or inorganically.
