Description
Description | The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency program in Namibia is used to finance environmentally and climate-relevant investments in renewable energies (generation and transmission) and energy efficiency by the state-owned energy supplier NamPower. The program consists of two phases with a total volume of EUR 45 million (Phase II stock check). Phase I (EUR 25 million) will finance the rehabilitation of the three existing turbines of the Ruacana hydroelectric power plant and the construction of the 400 kV transmission line between Gerus-Otjikoto in northern Namibia as well as two 220 kV transmission lines in an industrial and tourist region on the west coast (Khan-Lithops and Walvis Bay-Kuiseb). In Phase II (EUR 20 million), EUR 20 million should be used for demand-side energy efficiency measures. The plan was for NamPower to finance the replacement of existing light bulbs in private households with 1 million LEDs and the replacement of electric water heaters with solar systems in 20,000 households. After NamPower was able to finance the replacement of the LEDs from its own resources in 2015 and the business decision was made in spring 2016 to stop the solar project, the remaining EUR 20 million in loans and the grant were promised to be used for other FC projects to improve the drinking water supply in Namibia. |
