Description

Description

The metal industry and industries that base their operations on the use of wood-based raw materials are important for the Nordic countries. Today, metal production is largely based on the use of fossil energy sources, leading to significant CO2 emissions. Today, industry in the Nordic countries has developed into a stage where a significant improvement in energy efficiency and further reduction of CO2 emissions is difficult to achieve. Due to political decision-making, e.g. from the EU, high demands are placed on the industrial sector to continue to significantly reduce its CO2 emissions in the coming years. At the same time, the economic competitiveness of industrial players must be maintained and employment and welfare in the Nordic region must be increased. To make an additional CO2 reduction economically possible, new industry integration platforms need to be developed. The main objective of this research project is to demonstrate the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of a new bioeconomy-steel industry-production platform (integrated steel, bio-based reducing agents and chemical production) through extensive laboratory studies, pilot scale experiments, system analyses and carbon footprint assessments.
