Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI)

RGI is a unique collaboration of NGOs and TSOs from across Europe. We promote fair, transparent, sustainable grid development to enable the growth of renewable energy to achieve full decarbonisation, in line with the Paris Agreement. Europe has committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 to meet its obligations under the Paris Agreement. This implies a profound transformation of its energy system, with energy efficiency and electrification based on RES at its core. The war in Ukraine highlighted the severe EU's energy dependencies and made even more urgent to accelerate the deployment of RES and the build-up of grids to strengthen energy security and accelerate decarbonisation. The EU put forward the necessary legislative tools to achieve this accelerated transition. In the upcoming two years, implementation at MS level and on the ground is essential to ensure that this transformation is achieved. In parallel, it is essential to protect nature, restore biodiversity, and gain the support of European citizens by fair policies. To support the implementation efforts and address the targets of an accelerated energy infrastructure built up, nature protection and citizens’ involvement, RGI's work programme 2025-6 focuses on three dimensions: 1) technical and spatial to investigate how to model, plan, and implement a fully decarbonised and optimised energy system; 2) environmental, to develop solutions to mitigate pressures, and restore nature and biodiversity on land and at sea; and 3) impacts on society on how to include and engage EU citizens on the accelerated path towards full decarbonisation. Our work programme emphasises on the need for collaboration and harnessing knowledge-based decision-making at the EU and MS levels. This will help support the implementation of EU energy, climate, nature policies on the ground, identify potential gaps and emerging challenges, and shape the needed framework for investments beyond 2030.
