Reopening of Historic Rail Line from Greenbushes Lithium Mine

Talison Lithium and the Western Australian government conducted a $6 million feasibility study to explore reopening a 78-kilometre historic rail line from the Greenbushes lithium mine to Bunbury Port, Kemerton, and Kwinana. The rail line, closed for over 15 years, was considered to reduce truck traffic through South West towns. However, the study concluded that reopening the rail line was not economically viable due to the high cost of refurbishment and the need for additional infrastructure. The project was abandoned as it would still require trucks for the first and final mile of transport, and the community exposure to traffic would not be significantly reduced.
