Reopening of Martin General Hospital as Rural Emergency Hospital

ECU Health proposes to reopen the shuttered Martin General Hospital in Williamston, North Carolina, as a rural emergency hospital. The hospital closed nearly two years ago, and the project aims to address the rural health care crisis by providing emergency department, imaging services, and laboratory services without inpatient beds. The project is supported by a $35 million allocation from the NC Care hospital initiative funded by state lawmakers in 2023. ECU Health plans to initially operate in the existing hospital facility and intends to build a new facility within three to ten years of reopening.
