Description

Description

The Town of Smiths Falls currently owns and operates a Class IV nitrifying tertiary treatment activated sludge plant that carries a wastewater treatment capacity of 14,700m3/day. The wastewater plant currently offers effluent disinfection through use of ultraviolet irradiation (UV). The existing UV disinfection system, (Trojan UV3000) was installed in 1992 and includes three UV banks with 23 modules per bank and 8 lamps per module. The UV3000 system has been discontinued by the manufacturer and will only be supported as long as parts are available. It is currently proposed that the 24 year old UV system be replaced with a newer model that will offer innovative features that will include variable output electronic ballasts, fewer bulbs, and an automated cleaning system. The project will offer environmental outcomes that will include reduced energy demands, reduced waste (fewer bulbs), and efficiencies in plant operations (i.e.. manual cleaning). The Rideau River is the receiving waterway for the Town’s effluent. This federally regulated waterway also carries a UNESCO designation recognized internationally.
