The point-of-sale (POS) terminal used by all agents of the transit operating authority was the first piece of equipment for which an official "upgrade" request was filed. In 2011, the V&P equipment obsolescence management process identified POS terminals as a priority because their hardware and software architecture is a major obstacle to any technological improvements. The POS terminals are equipped with a 56K modem and, like telephone lines, use analogue signals. It is impossible to purchase new equipment or repair existing equipment. It is impossible to upgrade the equipment as part of the project to replace the automated messaging systems, and therefore impossible to accept new AMS and new smart cards with superior encryption standards.
