Description
Description | The FC program to promote reproductive health implemented in Niger is being implemented within the scope for health and builds on the FC's long-standing commitment to reproductive health. This topic is still of central importance to the Niger government due to over seven births per woman and a high rate of pregnancy-related complications. The high maternal mortality rate (630/100,000) and infant mortality rate (24/1,000) can be explained by poor health care, staff shortages, the desolate state of the infrastructure and a lack of medication. In rural areas in particular, medical care coverage is inadequate, with 45% of the population receiving it. In order to promote the provision of high-quality services in the field of reproductive health, health facilities in the Tahoua region will be expanded, rehabilitated and equipped in the second phase of the project. In addition, targeted awareness-raising and communication measures in selected primary and secondary schools and neighboring villages are intended to increase demand for reproductive health services. The target group is the population of the region, with a particular focus on women of childbearing age, newborns, and young people in primary and secondary schools. The training and further education of staff (professionals, administration, teaching) and employees of local NGOs are integrated into all components (cross-cutting theme). The project is sponsored by the Ministry of Health (Ministère de la Santé Publique). It is implemented locally by the Regional Directorate for Health (Direction Regionale de la Santé Publique). The project (volume of EUR 15 million) is being supported by an implementation consultant at national and regional level and is to be implemented within 3 to 4 years. |
