Description | A Texas-based power developer, HGP Intelligent Energy, has proposed to repurpose nuclear reactors from decommissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and submarines to power an AI data center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. The project aims to deploy two naval pressurized water reactors producing approximately 450MW and 520MW of electricity respectively. This would be the first time military nuclear reactors are converted for civilian use, with an estimated project cost between $1.8 billion and $2.1 billion. HGP plans to apply for a loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to start the project. |
