Description

Description

Tanzania is home to a wide variety of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. 38% of Tanzania's total land area is designated as protected areas. The Serengeti National Park (SNP), the Nyerere National Park (NNP) and the Selous Game Reserve (SGR) are part of a protected area system that is one of the largest and most important in the world and is of great importance for the preservation of global biodiversity, the climate and large wildlife populations. Due to the lack of tourism in the wake of the Corona crisis, the collapse in income has led to the cessation of important activities in the protected area operation - at the same time, the pressure on the use of the protected areas is increasing. The aim of the project is to ensure the maintenance of crucial measures for biodiversity protection, protected area operation and the sustainable management of natural resources in the selected protected areas SNP, NNP and SGR in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. At the same time, the project aims to make a contribution to ensuring that the protected areas emerge from the crisis more sustainable and resilient as part of a green recovery component. The project complements the existing projects Sustainable Development of the Serengeti Ecosystem, Sustainable Management of the Selous Game Reserve and Sustainable Development of Protected Areas I. Key measures to achieve the objectives are the financing of running costs of the protected areas, the procurement of equipment, the development of sustainable tourism plans and the implementation of participatory land use planning in the villages in the neighboring areas. The project is sponsored by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) and the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) in cooperation with the Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF). The target group of the project is the population of selected neighboring districts of the SNP, NNP and SGR.
