A high-rise building in Manhattan, originally the old Pfizer building, is undergoing a residential transition to become 1600 apartments. The project involves adding 11 floors to the existing 22-floor high-rise. During construction, two steel support columns buckled on the 21st floor under the weight of four recently added new floors, causing multiple floors to cave in. Construction crews have been working to stabilize the building by installing metal beams, galvanized steel, and poles. The city cited the building and construction site for multiple construction violations, which have been remedied. Investigations will be conducted after the building is stabilized to determine the long-term intervention needed for stability.
