Restoration and Public Opening of Grottino del Campidoglio Tunnels

planned

A little-known network of subterranean passageways beneath Rome's Capitoline Hill, known as the Grottino del Campidoglio or Capitoline Grotto, is undergoing a $2.8 million restoration project to prepare it for public tours. The tunnels, covering 42,000 square feet and historically used as a quarry, cistern, tavern, bomb shelter, and marketplace, will feature museum exhibits, artifacts, and guided tours with disabled access and multilingual support. Modern technology such as laser scanning, structural reinforcements, radon gas ventilation, specialized air filters, and a guided-only entry system are being installed to ensure safety and preservation.
