Description
Description | The Øresund Bridge is an 8-kilometre combined railway and motorway bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark across the Øresund strait. It starts near Malmo on the Swedish coast and stretches to the man-made Danish Island of Peberholm, where a tunnel continues to the Danish Island of Amager, home to Copenhagen airport, making the total journey about 16 km. The bridge was a collaborative project between Swedish company Svedab and Danish firm A/S Øresundsforbindelsen. Construction began in 1995 and the bridge opened to traffic in July 2000. It has an average daily footfall of 70,000 people and cost around £3.4 billion, with costs expected to be recouped by 2037. Crossing fees vary by vehicle type. |
