Commuting across the Öresund is increasing. The Öresund Metro project works to prevent capacity problems and plans for future metro trains. There is a vision for Malmö and Copenhagen to function as a common city. This, in turn, requires that the commuting over the Öresund is fast and smooth. The Öresund Metro project is working to ensure that the cities will be connected further through a subway across the Öresund, and will anticipate the needs that will be present on the route. — If we are to be able to function as a big city, we need to connect even more and we need to increase travel opportunities with faster journeys," says Malena Möller, project manager for Öresund Metro and traffic strategist in the City of Malmö. Commuting for stronger region: Several studies show that the Öresund region becomes more competitive internationally, the closer Denmark and Sweden work. It can attract labor and connect colleges and universities. But more cooperation will also increase the pressure on the railways. Already today we can see how problems will arise due to the new rail connection between Germany and Denmark under the Femern Belt, which means that more freight trains will cross the Øresund Bridge. However, preventing capacity problems here is important for the development of the region. — For those who are going to work commuting, it becomes inhibiting if you cannot travel when you want, if the trains are not running on time or are full. It can prevent people from taking a job in the other country and we don't want to risk that. Good foresight: The main focus of the project is the proposal to build a metro across the Öresund. The upcoming work is based on two previous projects where the City of Malmö and the Municipality of Copenhagen have examined where the Øresund Metro should be placed, how it can contribute to integration and what effects it will create on both the environment and the economy of the region. Now they are working further by immersing themselves in how Öresund metro can be connected with the upcoming high-speed trains in Sweden and how it can be built to minimise environmental impact and societal costs. Another important part is to find where in Copenhagen and Malmö it is advisable to connect the metro further. And even if there is no timeline yet, it’s important to start right now. — Such large infrastructure projects take a very long time to implement, so we need to start investigating and preparing on time. This way, it is faster to build once the metro is cleared. Learn from each other: As the future metro will connect the countries, Malena Möller sees as a matter of course that Malmö and Copenhagen are working together. She is delighted with what she learns from her Danish colleagues. We learn a lot from each other about opportunities and challenges, and it increases not only understanding of this project, but understanding of each other.
