Retrofit of 40 Mercitalia Rail locomotives TRAXX E.494 with ERTMS B3

The European Commission has promoted a program for the deployment of the ERTMS/ETCS (European Rail Traffic Management System/European Train Control System) along the railway Trans-European transport network, as foreseen by Regulation UE n.2024/1679. In this scenario and in order to harmonize signalling systems, Mercitalia Rail (MIR), Rail Freight Operator, is equipping its fleet with interoperable ERTMS/ETCS baseline 3 on on-board units to prevent the technological bottleneck of being unable to run on ERTMS equipped lines. The vehicles involved in the action will be n. 40 locomotives type TRAXX E.494, of which 1 prototype, that today run on the national network and on the Italian side of the 4 European Transport Corridors (ETCs): 1) North Sea — Rhine — Mediterranean, 2) Scandinavian – Mediterranean, 3) Baltic Sea — Adriatic Sea and 4) Mediterranean.
