The Rio Tinto Kasiya project in Malawi is a large-scale mining project hosting the world's largest natural rutile deposit and the world's second-largest flake graphite deposit. The deposit is shallow and unconsolidated, allowing for large-scale dry mining using draglines and haul trucks. The project has a projected mine life of 25 years, with a pre-tax net present value of US$2.2 billion and estimated annual EBITDA of approximately US$476 million. Rio Tinto holds an 18.2% equity stake but has declined operatorship, leaving Sovereign Metals as the operator. The project is positioned to serve critical mineral markets with binding offtake agreements and development finance architecture in progress.
