The Rivas Irrigation Project for Nicaragua will assist in financing the development of irrigation on some 9,000 hectares situated on the western shore of Lake Nicaragua. This will be the first public irrigation project in Nicaragua. The climate of the western shore area is tropical and the soils and topography are suitable for irrigated agriculture. The project will increase agricultural production by promoting more intensive use of land and greater crop diversification. Its components are: 1) construction of an intake and conveyance canal; 2) construction of two pumping stations and reservoirs; 3) development of 87 km of distribution canals and laterals together with on-farm distribution systems; 4) installation of a 65 km power transmission line; 5) improvement of 25 km of existing feeder roads; 6) construction of an additional 65 km of new feeder roads; and 7) construction of an experiment and demonstration farm. These additions will help to promote agricultural production and crop diversification in Nicaragua.
