Description | The River Des Peres tunnel system in St. Louis is a critical part of the city's combined sewer system, carrying wastewater and stormwater beneath the city. Originally built in the 1890s and expanded with a large tunnel system in the early 1900s, the system is now planned to be expanded with 15 to 16 miles of new tunnels up to 250 feet underground to increase capacity by roughly 300 million gallons, supporting the existing tunnels and feeding into the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant. The expansion project is anticipated to be completed by the late 2030s. |
