Description | The River Des Peres tunnel system in St. Louis is a critical part of the city's combined sewer system, carrying wastewater and stormwater beneath the city. Originally constructed in the 1890s and expanded with a tunnel system in the early 1900s, the system is currently being monitored and maintained. There are plans to expand the system with 15 to 16 miles of new tunnels up to 250 feet underground to increase capacity by approximately 300 million gallons, supporting the existing tunnels and feeding into the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant. This expansion is anticipated to be completed by the late 2030s. |
