Description | The River Des Peres tunnel system in St. Louis is a critical part of the city's wastewater system, with over four miles of tunnels beneath the city. Originally created in the 1890s and enclosed to manage wastewater and stormwater, the system is now planned to be expanded with 15 to 16 miles of new tunnels up to 250 feet underground. This expansion will support the existing tunnels when they reach capacity and increase the system's capacity by roughly 300 million gallons, feeding into the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project is anticipated to be completed by the late 2030s. |
