Description
Description | The River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project is the largest infrastructure project South Australia has ever attempted, involving the construction of 6.5 miles of road tunnels under Adelaide. It uses three large-scale tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named Mary, Catherine, and Elizabeth to dig twin Southern Tunnels and Northern Tunnels concurrently. The project aims to complete a non-stop motorway through Adelaide, removing 21 sets of traffic lights and reducing peak hour travel time by up to 40 minutes. The project cost is A$15.4 billion (approximately $10.7 billion USD), funded equally by the state and federal governments. The tunneling is expected to take up to 24 months, with the road opening planned for 2031. |
