Description
Description | The project objective is to decommission and reclaim the landfill of the R.M. of Excel No. 71 - Viceroy, non-compliant with the best management practices for landfill construction. Landfill has a surface area of 0.59 hectares and was permitted to only receive municipal waste during its operation. The landfill is currently closed and ready for decommissioning. Environmental Site Assessment Level II and the Corrective Action Plan have been already completed; therefore, the scope of the project includes implementing a Decommissioning and Reclamation plan that is acceptable to the Ministry of Environment’s Landfill Section. Decommissioning and Reclamation activities include the design and construction of the final engineered cover, storm water management, observing installed monitoring wells, removal of existing infrastructure, recycling, metal, and reclamation activities to ensure it is in conformance with the surrounding lands and the future intended use. Reclaimed landfill will be owned by the R.M. of Excel No. 71 with the intended use of native pastureland. Decommissioning and reclamation of the proposed landfill will attenuate the generation of leachate which in turn increases capacity to reduce soil pollutants in line with the Environmental Quality Outcomes of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the ICIP. |
