Description

Description

The project objective is to decommission and reclaim the landfill for the Rural Municipality of Mankota No. 45, compliant with the best management practices for landfill decommissioning construction. The landfill area being decommissioned has a surface area of approximately 0.35 hectares and was permitted to only receive municipal waste during its operation. The landfill is currently in operation and will be closed prior to decommissioning activities. A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and the Corrective Action Plan have been already completed; therefore, the scope of the project include completing and implementing a Decommissioning and Reclamation plan that is acceptable to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment’s Landfill Section. Decommissioning and Reclamation activities include the design and construction of the final engineered cover, removal of existing infrastructure, recycling, metal, concrete, clean wood piles, and reclamation activities to ensure it is in conformance with the surrounding lands and the future intended use. Landfill may be converted to a transfer station where bins will only be used. Reclaimed landfill will be owned by Rural Municipality of Mankota No. 45 and may be used as a future transfer station. Decommissioning and reclamation of the proposed landfill area will attenuate the generation of leachate which in turn increases capacity to reduce soil pollutants in line with the Environmental Quality Outcomes of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the ICIP.
