Description
Description | The project objective is to decommission and reclaim the existing landfill waste cell of the RM of Wood River No. 74 non-compliant with the best management practices for landfill construction. The existing landfill cell has a surface area of 1.62 hectares and was permitted to only receive municipal waste during its operation. The landfill is currently in operation as a transfer station and will be temporarily closed prior to and during the decommissioning activities. The scope of the project includes the Environmental Site Assessment Level II and the Corrective Action Plan, and completing and implementing a Decommissioning and Reclamation plan that is acceptable to the Ministry of Environment’s Landfill Section. Decommissioning and Reclamation activities include the design and construction of the final engineered cover, installation of monitoring wells, and reclamation activities to ensure it is in conformance with the surrounding lands and the future intended use. The reclaimed landfill will be owned by the RM of Wood River No. 74, and the Town of Lafleche, with the intended use of returning the land back to native grass. Decommissioning and reclamation of the proposed existing landfill waste cell will attenuate the generation of leachate which in turn increases capacity to reduce soil pollutants in line with the Environmental Quality Outcomes of the Green Infrastructure Stream of the ICIP. |
