The Highway Construction Project for Mexico will assist in financing the construction or reconstruction of 13 roads totaling 3,200 kilometers. The project will form part of a larger five year program to improve and extend the Federal Highway System. The current system is inadequate and unable to meet the various needs of the Mexican population. The project will help to alleviate this problem by constructing new roads in order to: 1) improve existing roads to standards which conform with much increased volumes of traffic; 2) connect some of the isolated areas, which are already populated and developed, or areas that have agricultural potential but are underutilized with the rest of the country; and 3) provide shorter and more direct routes between important commercial centers, densely populated areas, and principal ocean ports.
