The Highway Improvement and Maintenance Project for Spain will assist in financing the improvement, repair, maintenance, and new construction of the nationally administered highway system. Spain has a very old and extensive network of roads, part of which dates back to Roman times. Most of the present highway system was built in the 1920's. It has been poorly maintained and has not kept up with modern design standards. As a result, many Spanish roads have deteriorated due to poor road design and have been unable to handle increased traffic density. The Government of Spain has stated that a general improvement and maintenance program for the existing highway network will be of the highest importance. The project will be divided into two parts:, 1) Highway Improvement Works Plan, which includes improvement of roads on the triangle Madrid Barcelona Alicante; construction of a new road from Oviedo to Figaredo in the north; construction of the Palma airport freeway on Mallorca; and construction of a new bridge over the Ebro River at Amposta in the Province of Tarragona. and 2) The Maintenance Plan, which includes procurement of equipment; and construction of adequate shops, office buildings, and warehouses for pilot divisions in the Province of Madrid and in the Northeast region. These two plans will modernize the highway system in Spain in order to alleviate road deterioration and increased traffic density.
