The Highway Construction and Maintenance Project for Argentina will assist in financing a ten year program for the reconstruction and improvement of Argentina's highways. Poor service of the country's railways has led to increased demand for highway transport. Currently, the roads and highways in Argentina are in poor condition. Some roads are paved while others are unpaved, gravel, or simply dirt trails. These conditions are hampering the economic growth of Argentina. A highway program is urgently needed to improve transport conditions and promote economic development. The project will make a useful contribution to the improvement of Argentina's road system by reconditioning and upgrading the standards of existing routes and improving road maintenance. Its components are: 1) reconstruction and improvement of 2,565 kilometers of various road sections; 2) procurement of road maintenance equipment, weighing equipment for axle load control, workshop machinery, tools for shops, and instruments; and 3) fees for consultants to assist in engineering and supervision of construction. These activities will improve road transport conditions in order promote safe and reliable transportation and economic growth.
