Description | The Highway Project for Belgian Congo will assist in the cost of rebuilding, improving, and constructing 5360 km of road. The project includes: a) the construction of 1170 km of new highway, including 950 km asphalt, into and between main towns; b) the improvement, without asphalting of 890 km of existing main roads; c) the improvement, to prepare for mechanized maintenance, of 3300 km of local road; and d) the provision of miscellaneous bridges and ferries. This project will have high priority in the Congo's economic planning, it will provide higher standards of living for the population, improve roads in order to reduce existing transport costs, move a growing volume of trade, and will open new production areas which are now inaccessible. |
