Rocchetta Tunnel Excavation on Naples–Bari High-Speed Rail Line

The Rocchetta Tunnel, part of the Apice–Hirpinia section of the Naples–Bari high-speed rail line, was fully excavated by Webuild. The tunnel is approximately 6.5 km long, running through the southern Apennines, and is the longest tunnel on this section. The excavation used the 'Futura' TBM machine, operating continuously for about one and a half years. The project includes installation of over 32,500 prefabricated concrete segments forming the tunnel's support structure. The Apice–Hirpinia section will be 18.7 km long, with nearly 13 km in tunnels, traversing the provinces of Avellino and Benevento. Related works include development of access to the future Hirpinia station with new roads, roundabouts, and parking areas. Excavation of the Melito Tunnel, the last tunnel in this section, will begin soon. The overall Naples–Bari line will have 145 km of new track, 15 tunnels, 25 viaducts, and 20 stations, enabling train speeds up to 250 km/h and reducing travel time between Naples and Bari to about two hours.
