The project involves the modernization and rehabilitation of public transport Metrorail services to replace the aging fleet of trains in operation in South Africa.The project aims to provide high-quality services to citizens, revitalize the rail engineering industry through local manufacturing, and promote local content in line with the Government's Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP2). The scope of the project involves the supply of 3,600 Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) over a 10-year period, along with technical maintenance support and spare supply for 18 years. The project is divided into 2 phases:the 1st phase involved the acquisition of 7,224 new passenger coaches and locomotives over a 10-year period; andthe 2nd phase will involve the procurement of an additional 4,600 units.The modernization program had 3 pillars:rolling stock general overhaul;rolling stock fleet renewal program; andsignaling and communications.
